HSU's Virtual Private Network (VPN) enables faculty and staff to access information on the campus network from off-campus. HSU requires that staff and faculty wishing to connect in this way use only the campus-approved GlobalProtect software (GlobalProtect is replacing OpenVPN).
Before setting up your campus VPN connection, you will need to request access to Global Protect via Account Settings. This will also add you to Duo Multi-factor authentication. See our page on Duo Multi-Factor Authentication. [1]
This access method will not work until it has been approved, AND a short while passes (like 10 minutes)
DUO is used as a second factor authentication when connecting to the Global Protect VPN. Once you have signed up for this, you will need to provide a second factor of authentication (like your bank uses) when accessing HSU resources like email or PeopleSoft, or this Global Protect VPN. To configure DUO on a mobile device download the DUO Mobile app from your mobile phone app store, then follow these instructions:
Adding a Mobile Device to the HSU Dual-Factor Authentication System (DUO) Instructions [1]
It is possible to use other forms of second factor authentication, like a code or SMS reply, but it becomes unreliable and complicated to configure. Please submit a ticket [2] if you wish to explore options other than a mobile phone app.
The back-end setup of Global Protect may take several hours to complete once a request has been placed.
Search the app store for Global Protect, and install from there. Typically an HSU user is not going to use Global Protect from their mobile phone.
If you have access to Software Center [4] (PC) or Self Service [4] (Mac), search for Global Protect, click Install, and follow the instructions from there.
Installing GlobalProtect on a Chromebook [5]
OR, if you have admin rights on your computer:
Go to gp.humboldt.edu [6] and enter your HSU credentials.
Enter Username and Password and click Sign In
GlobalProtect will show you have successfully connected
NOTE: For security reasons, please be sure to always disconnect when you are finished with your VPN session.
If you encounter any difficulties, wish to provide feedback on the instructions, and/or request assistance please submit a HELP Ticket.
