Help With My Computer

When your computer or application starts acting strangely, it can be hard to know exactly what’s going wrong. However, the steps outlined below can help you to potentially resolve the problem yourself (no technical expertise required!).

One thing remains of constant importance, however: backups. Even when your computer is running smoothly, we always recommended you have a current backup of your data. Your computer can crash at any time, rendering the data on it inaccessible.

For all types of problems:

  1. If possible, save all your work and exit out of all open programs
  2. Reboot the computer
  3. Install the latest available updates for your operating system and applications (this happens automatically on Humboldt-managed computers).
  4. Check if a newer version of any non-standard software you use is available and install it.
  5. If new software was recently installed on your computer, try uninstalling it - sometimes new software can be incompatible with existing software on your computer
