Computer Purchasing Recommendations for Students
Cal Poly Humboldt recommends the following computing hardware for new students in the 2024/2025 Academic Year.
Minimum System Recommendations for Students
Windows:
- Windows 11
- Minimum 512GB solid state drive (SSD)
- Intel Core i5-14600 or AMD Ryzen 5 9000
- 16GB RAM
- OPTIONAL: Nvidia RTX dedicated GPU for graphics intensive uses
Macintosh:
- macOS Sonoma
- Minimum 512GB solid state drive (SSD)
- Apple Silicon M4 or better processor
- 16GB RAM
We recommend a MacBook Air with a 13” display OR a MacBook Pro with largest screen and solid state drive you can afford. MacBooks are not upgradeable after purchase, so we recommend purchasing the best system possible for your budget.
For Degree Programs requiring higher performance computers
Art
The art department recommends macOS Devices for students in its programs.
Geospatial Program (GSP)
- Windows 11
- i7-14700 or better processor
- Dedicated graphics card (Nvidia RTX 3000 series or higher, Nvidia Quadro, or AMD graphics with at least 4GB of video RAM)
- 32GB RAM
- 1TB or largest solid state hard drive you can afford
Theater, Film and Dance
- Macbook Pro M4Pro
- 36GB RAM
- 1TB (or the largest solid state drive you can afford)
- macOS Sonoma
- 20 graphics cores
