CIO’s Office

The Office of the Chief Information Officer develops and implements strategies to provide a coherent and coordinated approach across the many domains of information technology for the entire university. The office promotes information technology solutions that improve teaching, learning, research, and administrative efficiencies. The CIO:

  • reports to and works closely with the Provost and other university leaders, advising on matters of information technology strategy, investment and security
  • acts as a catalyst for both short- and long-term planning, continuously assessing and re-balancing the appropriate mix of people, processes, and technology to advance university priorities and driving many of HSU’s technology projects and initiatives
  • provides day-to-day leadership and administration of the six major units within Information Technology Services and an $8.9 million annual budget
  • represents the information technology needs of Humboldt State University at the CSU level

ITS Administrative Support

The Administrative Support team takes care of:

  • all requests for access to HSU information systems by university employees
  • financial transaction management for the campus Pay-for-Print system
  • general business support functions for ITS departments and staff

Information Security

The information security team manages all aspects of information security on campus: 

  • Security awareness training
  • Technical controls
  • Mandatory compliance activities as required by federal and state laws as well as CSU policy

The team keeps abreast of events and standards in the information security industry, issuing news bulletins and alerts to the campus whenever a security-related event poses a risk to campus information security.

Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM)

It is the policy of the CSU to make information technology resources and services accessible to all CSU students, faculty, staff and the general public regardless of disability.

AIM provides resources and services to assist HSU students, staff, and faculty to comply with the CSU’s Accessible Technology Initiative. AIM staff will assist the HSU community by providing digital document processing, document scanning and conversion, and assistance with determining where closed captioning is desirable.

The Desktop Support Team provides the following services for faculty and staff:

Help Desk

The Technology Help Desk is your initial point of contact for the Information Technology Services department. If you are having difficulties accessing Humboldt State University systems, need your password reset, have a telephone issue, networking problems or issues with your computer, the Technology Help Desk is here to help!  We are just a call, email, or visit away.

Technology Equipment Checkout & Event Support

Technology Equipment Checkout (TEC) makes a wide range of multimedia and computer equipment available to faculty, and to students with faculty approval, for use in the presentation of instructional materials.

Special event equipment and support is also available from TEC, but be aware that priority is always given to classroom academic use.

Working with project sponsors and stakeholders across campus, the Project Office defines and delivers information technology services and solutions in alignment with the university’s goals and priorities. The Project Office also keeps campus informed about IT-related activities and maintain the ITS website content to ensure information is current and relevant.

Enterprise and Client Technology

Enterprise and Client Technology

The Enterprise and Client Technology (ECT) group consists of 14 full-time employees and 15 student assistants across three teams:

  • System Administration
  • Computer Labs & Smart Classrooms
  • Client Technology Integration

The ECT unit is responsible for the delivery of effective, secure, and reliable technology services that enable, promote, and support students, faculty and staff in pursuit of their goals. As a customer service group, our highest priority is to be responsive to the strategic IT needs of the campus.

The team offers leadership, consultation, and support in the advancement of technology by engaging the campus community and working in collaborative partnerships with HSU's schools, colleges, and administrative divisions.

Computer Labs & Smart Classrooms

The Computer Labs & Smart Classroom team is responsible for all the technology used in HSU’s learning spaces. This includes computers, software, presentation equipment, remote control devices such as clickers, and printers used for teaching and learning.

The team is committed to providing the highest-possible quality of service to students, staff, and faculty, in support of the university’s emphasis on student success. Through the extensive use of analytics and other predictive technologies, the team aims to minimize interruptions to instruction due to technology issues and works to provide a consistently excellent learning environment at all times.

Client Technology Integration

The Client Technology team’s goal is to help everyone at HSU be as productive as possible through the smart use of enterprise tools and automation, so they are always on the lookout for innovative technologies that support those goals.

The team is responsible for building, deploying, and updating the application sets for campus computers, including computer images and applications along with Microsoft and third party software updates. They are continually working to improve the reliability, performance, and security of computers and computing devices on campus.

System Administration

The System Administration team is responsible for campus data center servers and services, which may be physically present at HSU or in the cloud.  Wherever possible, data center resources are integrated to support the mission of the campus in the most efficient manner.

The team is tasked with providing redundancy, scalability, and high availability of data center resources thus ensuring accessibility around the clock.  To make certain everything runs smoothly, the team conducts continuous analysis, research, and proactive monitoring.
