CIO’s Office

The Office of the Chief Information Officer develops and implements strategies to provide a coherent and coordinated approach across the many domains of information technology for the entire university. The office promotes information technology solutions that improve teaching, learning, research, and administrative efficiencies. The CIO:

  • reports to and works closely with the Provost and other university leaders, advising on matters of information technology strategy, investment and security
  • acts as a catalyst for both short- and long-term planning, continuously assessing and re-balancing the appropriate mix of people, processes, and technology to advance university priorities and driving many of Humboldt’s technology projects and initiatives
  • provides day-to-day leadership and administration of the six major units within Information Technology Services and an $8.9 million annual budget
  • represents the information technology needs of Cal Poly Humboldt at the CSU level

Accessible Technology

The California State University (CSU) is committed to making information technology resources and services accessible to all students, faculty, staff, and the general public, regardless of disability. This commitment is guided by the Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI).

The ATI Coordinator leads our campus efforts in three key areas:

  • Instructional Materials
  • Web Accessibility
  • Procurement

The Accessibility Resource Center (ARC) supports faculty and staff in ensuring digital documents meet ATI requirements. ARC offers the following services:

  • Processing digital documents, including PDFs, to ensure ATI compliance
  • Scanning and converting hardcopy documents to digital formats
  • Assisting with closed captioning projects

Information Security

Information Security

The information security team oversees information security on campus: 

  • Security awareness training
  • Protecting data
  • Managing cyber risks
  • Mandatory compliance activities as required by federal and state laws as well as CSU policy

The team works to prevent unauthorized access, detect and respond to cyber threats, and maintain the integrity of the university's digital infrastructure, ensuring the campus community remains safe from cyber risks.

Help Desk

The Technology Help Desk is your initial point of contact for the Information Technology Services department. If you are having difficulties accessing Cal Poly Humboldt systems, need your password reset, have a telephone issue, networking problems or issues with your computer, the Technology Help Desk is here to help!  We are just a call, email, or visit away.

The Enterprise and Client Technology (ECT) group consists of 22 full-time employees and a few student assistants across 5 separate teams:

The ECT unit is responsible for the delivery of effective, secure, and reliable technology services that enable, promote, and support students, faculty and staff in pursuit of their goals. As a customer service group, our highest priority is to be responsive to the strategic IT needs of the campus.

The team offers leadership, consultation, and support in the advancement of technology by engaging the campus community and working in collaborative partnerships with Humboldt's schools, colleges, and administrative divisions.

Client Technology Integration

The Client Technology team’s goal is to help everyone at Humboldt be as productive as possible through the smart use of enterprise tools and automation, so they are always on the lookout for innovative technologies that support those goals.

The team is responsible for building, deploying, and updating the application sets for campus computers, including computer images and applications along with Microsoft and third party software updates. They are also responsible for Azure Virtual Desktop (vLab/vOffice), and other Azure solutions. They handle everything from setting up virtual desktop environments and implementing various Azure services to user support, troubleshooting issues, and staying updated with the latest Azure features and best practices to ensure optimal performance and user satisfaction. They are continually working to improve the reliability, performance, and security of computers and computing devices on campus.

The Housing Information Technology Consultant is responsible for administering the student resident management platform, development of the myHousing portal, the campus commerce and meal plan management platform, department workstations, and residence hall wired and wireless networks known as "ResNet."

Dining 

ITS Dining – Our goal is to deliver efficient, reliable and smooth operations of all dining and retail outlets as well end user support for the various needs of Chartwells food service group staff.

We focus on key technologies and services which include:

  • NEXTEP Point of Sale (POS) and unattended kiosks support.
  • CBORD integration and student accounts in collaboration with Housing.
  • Standard operating procedures and POS transaction workflows.
  • Sustainability technologies.
  • Advertisement display and digital signages and management.
  • Chartwell's applications and technologies and windows end-user support.
  • Dining services expansion and project management.

Research Support

The Research Support team is part of the Humboldt High Performance Computing Center, responsible for supporting faculty and students as they explore grant opportunities to further research, creative activities, and program development. These projects may require high performance computing (HPC), storage, code review, or software purchases. In addition to research resources, we offer limited support for instructional needs that require HPC.

Systems Administration

The Systems Administration team is responsible for campus data center servers and services, which may be physically present at Humboldt or in the cloud.  Wherever possible, data center resources are integrated to support the mission of the campus in the most efficient manner.

The team is tasked with providing redundancy, scalability, and high availability of data center resources thus ensuring accessibility around the clock.  To make certain everything runs smoothly, the team conducts continuous analysis, research, and proactive monitoring.

The Systems Administration team also works closely with other teams managing the Identity and Access Management infrastructure for services on campus and in the cloud.

Institutional Research, Analytics, and Reporting

Institutional Research, Analytics, and Reporting

Institutional Research, Analytics, and Reporting (IRAR) consists of 8 full-time employees and 2-3  interns across two teams:

  • Institutional Research
  • Enterprise Data Management

Institutional Research, Analytics, and Reporting (IRAR) provides a broad spectrum of services to all internal departments and external bodies as necessary. IRAR is responsible for the official collection, analysis, and reporting of institutional data on topics such as enrollment, retention and graduation rates, faculty and staff characteristics, instructional and programmatic costs and productivity, financial peer comparisons, and other data for the purpose of providing accurate information to support transparent, evidence-based planning and decision making and a culture of assessment.

Institutional Research

The Institutional Research team consists of four full-time employees and 2-3 interns.  The team is responsible for providing data to inform decision support and guidance to many entities on campus with the goal of evaluating the success of academic and co-curricular student-support programs and their role in retention and learning outcomes. The team responds to data requests from the campus community for compliance, for comparisons, for assessment of current strategies, and for help with formulating goals and objectives, analyzing data, planning and designing processes, and establishing performance metrics and benchmarks.

Enterprise Data Management

The Enterprise Data Management (EDM) team consists of three full-time employees. The EDM serves as the custodian of the institution's data assets. Their primary purpose is to ensure that data is accurate, accessible, relevant, and secure to support effective decision-making, research, and operational efficiency.

To support a data-informed decision-making culture, the team is engaged in a five-year enterprise data transformation (EDT) project to bring Humboldt’s data strategy into modern architecture. The ultimate goal of the EDT Project is to successfully implement an end-to-end, reliable, robust, scalable, and repeatable enterprise data solution to support equitable and inclusive student success. Aligning with Humboldt's Strategic Plan (2021-2026), the EDT project comprises six subprojects. (1) Data Pipeline, (2) Business Intelligence, (3) People, (4) DataOps & continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD), (5) IT Governance and Data Governance, and (6) Evidence and Statistics to make decisions. These six subprojects or foundations will build the base upon which IRAR will build a mature modern data infrastructure which will include a focus on (1) Artificial Intelligence, (2) Machine Learning, and (3) Knowledge Science.
